I wonder how much of that is related to two working adult households. 50 years ago more than half of our country couldn't relate to workplace drama, so you had shows about families at home or roommates or unrealistic detective stories. With the collapse of unions and wage stagnation, now it's rare for adults to not have some kind of job. People can't even retire any more.
