But one of my most favorite things about jazz is standards and different arrangements and treatments of those standards. There's always something new and interesting in those old tunes. But after you listen for a while, you start to hear something different -- you hear these quirks and fillips and realize they're working in hooks and riffs from other songs, sometimes standards, sometimes more obscure. This can be either planned or on the fly, but they're there more often than not.
