This is partially due to the death throes of a media paradigm built upon the patriarchal “I buy ink by the barrel” mindset. The Gilded Age robber barons relied upon the media to, well, gild their industrial capitalist model of “civilizing” a growing American nation. They’re pissed as hell that the democratization of information undercuts their role as not only kingmaker but the arbiter of information.
