I met someone at the Lightning meetup last night who had lost a decent amount of sats when BlueWallet shut down its custodial node last year. They gave users about 2 months to withdraw after posting a message on their blog. There were no notifications or updates to the app to inform users who didn’t know this was happening. I warned people here, and hopefully helped a few people. But I’m sure there are some who simply gave up on Lightning after this. For some, it might have even been the only time they ever used bitcoin. It’s frustrating because it’s too late to do anything about it now.
quoting note1hk5…s6tqAs I revisit gladstein (npub1trr…hdpu)'s book Check Your Financial Privilege, I can’t help wonder if the people he wrote about in Cuba, Africa, and other places where people used early-generation Lightning wallets as savings accounts lost some or all of their sats when BlueWallet shut down their custodial node and only mentioned it on a single blog post and a handful of tweets, or because Muun doesn’t operate well in the high-fee environment we’re seeing now.
When developers build products that anyone in the world can use to transact and store their hard-earned value, they have a responsibility to do right by their users. It’s unethical to put the most vulnerable people in society at risk of losing their funds because the builders didn’t think through the consequences of what they built and who would depend on it.
