I’ve adopted a policy of apologizing right up front for future moments when I might misgender. I tell them I always intend to gender correctly, and that when I make a mistake it’s not intentional or me rejecting their preference. It’s me struggling with decades of default language habits wired up in my head. Depending who it is I might throw a joke in like “could ‘sexy’ be a pronoun? I could switch to that for everyone pretty easily.” Anyway, they understand. If they see the effort and intent, they’ve all been pretty happy.
