We place value on people preserving physical heritage (buildings and such) and applying heritage skills, largely as a form of art. So I don't see why the same can't be true of programming.
There is some aspect of craft about coding that rarely comes to the fore when you're being paid to build something to a specification.
It's OK to write code without commercial purpose and it's probably quite a healthy thing. It can feel quite a frivolous waste of time. But it's also quite enlightening.
