A funny name, but it's derived from "redirected walking" which is a way to fool you into thinking you're walking in a straight line when in fact you're walking in a circle. It's surprisingly effective!:

But it does still require a reasonably large space to pull off - fitting it in 5 meters is going to be hard. The "manual" version sounds like a decent compromise.
