I've had the same thought, but wasn't sure if it was a valid approach. Really glad to hear confirmation from someone more knowledgeable.

So that leads me to a follow on question: If witness data isn't needed to validate block hashes (like in pre segwit nodes), then couldn't future taproot nodes allow the user to omit whole sections of witness data using some set of curated blacklists chosen by the user? Basically censoring, but like nostr (user chooses what to block) rather than twitter (central authority decides what's good and what's not).
