Umm. Cinerama was three synchronized 35mm projectors displaying on a curved screen.

70mm was just 2x as wide as 35mm (well, sort of) but otherwise handled in a similar way. There were several 70mm theaters in the 70s and 80s. I saw the original Star Wars and many other films in 70mm.

IMAX switched from vertical to horizontal projection using the 70mm film to get the larger sizes. The US pavilion at World's Fair 1974 (Spokane) had the third IMAX projector.
