It's a lot more different than that. In Shanghainese tones are not that important its relatively flat compared to Mandarin however even words are totally different. So when people from Shanghai want to keep something secret they switch over and even if you're a Mandarin scholar you're not gonna understand anything, even if they slow down. That's not the same for example with Portuguese from Brazil vs Portugal whereby Brazilians can understand once the Portuguese slow down and stop mumbling and cutting word endings, which makes certain phrases in Portuguese sound like Russian. The same applies to Spanish. Basically Brazilian Portuguese and Mexican Spanish are more musical, slower, clearer and (at least for Portuguese) more influenced by Italian.
