That sounds somewhat similar to the differences in Spanish between Mexicans and Spaniards. It's basically the same language, but words are pronounced differently, and they have different metaphors and idioms. I had a friend who spoke Mexico Spanish, but struggled to understand Spain Spanish. He could make out a few words, but following a conversation was very hard for him.
