Around the 2000s there was a rapid increase in books being published, especially eBooks, which needed ISBNs, so the barcode number and the old ISBN became equivalent. You’ll often find books with both ISBNs listed on the copyright page, one with 13 numbers one with 10, for backward compatibility.

Initially they were all 978-etc, but those numbers are totally arbitrary. You could use anything, and now you have plenty of ISBNs available. (4/5)
