978 is a hack to expand the ISBN range (a bit like IPv6 expanding IPv4, if you know your internet addressing protocols). For some reason, book barcodes needed to have 13 digits, so it was agreed to just append 978 to them and fix the check digit. The till software would read the barcode and then convert it to the 10 digit ISBN for stock management. (3/5)
