I should add that Pedro Pascal is terrific as the all-conquering but war-weary general Marcus Acacius, the stand-out performance of the film for me.
My biggest disappointment was in Denzel Washington's performance - he's one of my favourite actors but his performance was just too 'blousy' and over the top.
It needed more sinister and less flouncing, I think. It was almost like he didn't believe in the film so just thought, what the heck, I'll camp it up.
