My older started with recorder, then flute, and with the encouragement of a middle-school teach switched to sax. Eventually, they settled on trombone. After a couple years, it was clear they had a calling. We paid for a year or so of piano lessons (we had a great teacher a block away!) before switching Ben to lessons in his instrument. (He got some at school, but some private lessons always help.) Ben became omnivorous, adding bass trombone and having no fear at all about trying new ones.
