I had a strong reaction to this throwaway comment partially *because* of the flexibility of the label and the vulnerability that implies.
If you're a member of a "fan culture" of a particular intellectual property, especially a popular one, there are æsthetic rituals (consuming media), totems (official merch), holy texts (wikis) etc for you to hide your ego behind. If it's a little cringey, well, that's just *the thing*, that's not *you*. Everybody's a fan of *the thing*.
