I remember bringing my daughter home a day after she was born. We opened the door and my wife said something like "now what? Is someone going to check on us or follow up or something?"
This event is why multi-generational homes were a good thing. Her mom flew out for a while after the birth but she had to go home at some point! My mom was a bit of a mess but I think she visited for a bit as well so we had a little drop in help from more experienced folks, not a lot though.
We got help from friends but we had no idea what help we needed! I went back to work because Zita slept all the time and so did my wife. We chose to use cloth diapers and we both did overnight changes and all that but we made it up as we went along. I mean, we read the books so we had knowledge and expectations but those books didn't talk about the long term results of the tiniest actions you take as a parent.
Parenting is just bizarre.
