Squash in the food forest is growing well


Last year the squash didn't do so well but this season it's looking on track for a decent harvest. Starting to climb up the trees looking for more light. We plant subsistence crops like squash, garlic and potatoes in-between the rows of perennials in the food forest to take advantage of the light before the canopy closes with the fruit trees. By doing so, not only am I preparing the soil to grow the annuals but when there isn't enough light to grow them any more I will have brought in fertility to feed the fruit trees for years to come.

I decided today was the day to put the squash seeds in the ground even though the bed has been prepared for a while. It rained the day before and is due to rain for the next few days which should create good conditions for germination. Last year, the squash crop didn't really turn out but the year before last was an excellent crop. Planted butternut, spaghetti and a new on we haven't grown yet, called patti pan. There should be just enough time left in the growing season here for the squash crop to mature. Fingers crossed, we are swimming in squash come fall.
