I use both services, Proton and Standard Notes. Disintermediating these for both my communication and notes was always a strength.
As with its acquisition of SimpleLogin, Proton is becoming more powerful as a privacy company, and integrating a lot of tools and services that could be beneficial for consumers.
At the same time, it risks becoming a single point of failure for end-to-end encrypted services that many of us rely on. Standard Notes has a benefit of being open source and self-hostable, so I do hope this remains true going forward.
