Hooke preferred to draw living insects noting at one point that didn't look the same when dead. So much of even the shape of an insect is lost when they die. You can't tell how they hold their body, colors and textures change.
Beyond just not wanting to kill things there are practical reasons why photos and videos of living creatures can be superior.
