The thing is AP is an open protocol. Once they allow their users to start exploring the fediverse, it's equivalent to building a big fat gate in their walled garden. In order to keep their users they will have to continue to "build a better mousetrap". But even then there will always be some leakage.
If even 5% of their users leak into the greater fediverse, that's an enormous boost! That'll basically double the population of the fedi...
Bringing it that much closer to achieving Network Effect. Once the fediverse achieves that event horizon, it will be extremely difficult to kill off by any means.
