Yet, I don't agree with the Republic being a small state. The body of laws regulating every single aspect of the public affairs, the "res publica" (hence the name Republic) was astonishing. You could say it was far smaller than most current states because the private property was to be ruled at the owners will, but it wasn't so small as the romanticized idea some seem to have.
