You need that “top” to pump water up to :) That’s why hydro storage is so much geography dependent and even in countries that theoretically have the mountains and talk a lot about renewables you don’t see much appetite to flood whole valleys to make new reservoirs :)

Let’s wait for any of these to actually reach 1 GWh deployment. Ideas are easy, scaling them up to industrial scale is difficult. I’ve been hearing about “Islay tidal power” and “PV from Sahara powering EU” since 2000’s :)
