Many ancient cultures documented the appearance of the comet, but it wasn't until Edmund Halley's time –now armed with the mathematical tools discovered by Isaac Newton– that he was able to identify the comet as the same recurrent object that is gravitationally bound, doing its periodic 76-year laps around the sun.
