Of course people had all of the standard arguments for why you should allow jerk-y behavior (people should deal with it and develop a thick skin, there's no point in banning people because people will evade bans, etc.), but we can see that banning jerks does actually work.
And while the arguments for why should ban jerks aren't exactly untrue, (for example) motivated jerks will evade bans, it turns out almost everyone will just change their behavior or leave instead of getting banned.
