You'd have to pretty incompetent to come to that conclusion. If you do an internet search for wordpress, the first listing is wordpress .com followed by .org, and the wikipedia page for the software. If you search for wpengine specifically, you get their website and their wikipedia page, both of which as far back as it's history goes explain clearly that it's a private managed hosting company for wordpress based websites.
Granted a lot of non-techy consumers are just plain dumb when it comes to basic knowledge about their own IT products. But that no more makes wpengine predatory of wordpress than it makes any number of businesses with "linux" in their name predators of linux, etc. If Mullenweg didn't want people using his product for-profit without cutting him in on it, then he should have chosen a different license in the first place. Trying to extort people after the fact is transparently scummy to put it mildly.
Moreover this is far from the first instance of this kind of behaviour on his part. He's done the same thing to other plugin developers who've contributed to his ecosystem and tried to make an honest living off their own labours. For instance this guy back in 2015.

Meanwhile Automattic is (according to wikipedia) valued at around $7.5 bln and Matt personally is worth net $400 mln. Yet he thinks he's entitled to more? WTAF is this dude's malfunction?
