Description of the participants as I see it:
WPEngine: company offering hosting services operating largely on exploiting confusion that they ARE wordpress (they're not) and producing a less-functional product (they silently disable wordpress version control to save bucks) and not contributing a lot back
Automattic/Wordpress.org/Matt Mullenweg: Founder of Wordpress, provides tons of support to the ecosystem completely for free including hosting the central repo for installing all plugins, seemingly driven insane and doing bizarre personal attacks and legally abusive actions to blackmail a company into handing over a large percentage of its revenue, singling out that company on wordpress.org & stealing the URL for their plugin and forcing wordpress.org users to agree they aren't associated with WPEngine to get access to plugins.
