I don't know a good solution for this, though. I absolutely want to "crowd source" some of the curation of my feed based on people I follow reporting other users for spam, impersonation, pornographic material, etc. I don't want to have to personally see that content and mute it myself every single time. It's one of the most valuable use-cases for the report feature that I know of.
Yes, that means people with more followers will naturally end up having more say in what other users see, and that's a shame, especially if they are being frivolous or vindictive about it. There should probably be a threshold for how many of your followers have to report someone before their posts are hidden from you, which I believe Amethyst has, though I am not sure what that threshold is. That won't eliminate the issue, but it does cut down on the likelihood of "a couple popular accounts" being able to conspire to hide other users they don't like from their followers' feeds.
I also think it would be good for those warnings that a post is being hidden due to your follows' reports to list what sort of reports, whether it was for impersonation, spam, nudity, or whatever other category.
I also find it to make perfect sense for this to be turned on by default, but allow the user to turn it off if they want. Most folks who aren't sticking around here aren't leaving because their posts or the posts of someone they want to see are being hidden for most users. Rather, they are leaving because content they absolutely never want to see is showing up in their feed and the tools they need to use to prevent that are not the default, and are not easy for the non-technical person to understand how to enable.
