You should take a deeper look at how Mastodon / the Fediverse works, it really isn't too different from the whole relay idea. The biggest difference is the existence of your home instance which you can also host yourself.
I admit that it doesn't offer the same "account mobility" though, moving your account to another instance is more complicated than changing relays (supposedly).
