Humans *with power* suck, especially humans with hierarchical/coercive/violent power; and they do evil things to other humans.
Sadly, power is intensely concentrated, so the rest of us who mean no harm can't do much on our own to stop the people with power from causing harm.
The first step is to realize that. The second step is to build community and to build distributed power to counteract all the concentrated power.
