It's honestly hard to understate how big of a revolution Git was when it came out. I had been working in the software industry for a few years by that time, and practically overnight, everyone started adopting it because it was simply vastly superior to anything else that existed before.

There's a well-known meme in software development that goes "fast, cheap, good — pick any two". And 99% of the time, that's exactly the sort of compromise you'll end up with. Git managed to satisfy all three: it was fast, it was free, and it was good.

So while Linux was what put Torvalds on the map as a software developer (and certainly deserved a lot of respect, let's be honest), this thing was an almost impossible stroke of genius. Dude peered right through the Matrix and pulled some strings that no one else had ever seen coming.
