It's a VCS (version control system), basically a software that helps to efficiently maintain and track the evolution of a piece of source code over time.
There have been many other popular implementations before Git, but they all had their flaws (sometimes pretty severe). Git, while certainly not perfect, was the first VCS that actually managed to deliver a perfectly balanced approach that worked for pretty much anyone everywhere, and had no particular weakness so excessive that it would disqualify itself from even the most exotic use cases.
Basically, it's the software equivalent of a Hattori Hanzo – a perfectly balanced sword that will never fail you even in the most extreme set of circumstances, as long as you're willing to learn how to wield it (which takes a lot of time and practice). Pretty much every other alternative will end up failing you at some point, but with git, there's somehow always some way to make it work if you're willing to put in the effort.
