i think my favourite answers to this so far are
* git's UI is inconsistent and "learn the internals" doesn't explain most of the weird terminology or help you memorize it
* learning the internals doesn't actually give you the tools to fix/prevent mistakes
* the "internals" are too far removed from the actual practicalities of using git
* “I’m extremely comfortable using git and I don't understand its internals at all”
* who has time to read a whole book about git anyway
