In many ways Linux has been massively adopted. So many embedded systems people use all the time are Linux based. That fact is simply hidden from them.
The end user desktop could and very well may be solved at some point. For the average desktop user, all that is needed is a browser as that’s all most people use. Think Chromebook. With everything big moving to SaaS platforms, the OS of the client becomes less important. Linux would be a perfectly good platform for such a low cost client system.
