Linux's diversity of distros is its weakness. If everyone could agree on one distro to concentrate on, then yes, I could see Linux one step closer to massive adoption.
You would need to also be looking towards massive GUI acceptance. The everyday user doesn't use a CLI for the majority of operations.
Right now, Linux isn't at that point.
