I don't think I would bother with the parity, but it depends on what you're defending against. You want at least two backup copies anyway, and my experience is that drives are MUCH more likely to fail entirely than develop a bad sector. Modern drives do sector replacement for a moderate number of bad sectors automatically, so seeing a bad sector without eons of SMART failures first is pretty rare.
