If you dump a couple of tons of salt water on a landscape that gets little rain, that landscape becomes barren. The salt requires water to wash it away if the ground is to recover.

San Francisco uses salt water in their hydrants. San Francisco is a paved environment.

And it's not something that would have stopped the fires anyway. The winds were hurricane force gusts -- they couldn't get aircraft into the air. When the winds began to die down, it was amazing how efficiently they contained the fire.

BTW, the embers were being spread house to house. The best suggestion for improvement I've heard to dat was a guy who suggested homeowners replaced their attic rodent screen with fireproof screens. When the fire gets into the house, that's when the house is lost.

That's an improvement homeowners will probably be willing to make, if the news gets spread over all the noise.
