Salt water won't make the earth permanently barren. It will recover after a few seasons. In antiquity they couldn't survive two years with no harvest so that was an effective measure. These days food is often grown a long way from where it's consumed.
Also note that any pumps and joints that are salt water resistant can also be used for freshwater so it's only a matter of expenditure, which would be small in comparison to the cost of the damage caused. It just adds flexibility.
