Imagine if Mastodon.social controlled any domain name used in any fediverse account. Unless I'm much mistaken, this would be the equivalent of how the BlueSky identity "broker" works.
It's exactly what Titter execs would have asked for; externalise the hosting costs and moderation responsibility, but keep control of the identity layer that determines who's in the network. If that wasn't the design brief, they could have just built on ActivityPub.
