Right, that's something I didn't know. You know why I didn't know about it? Because I didn't have to know in order to use my phone. Nor did you have to know it 100 years ago. Only thing you needed to know was your number, and the number of the person(s) you wanted to call. If I pop out my SIM card today from my current phone and place it in another phone, one that's been just released, I wouldn't have to know all these information either (okay, maybe I should know the carrier, but I wouldn't have to type it manually, just select it from a scrolling list).

Instead, if I pick up a brand new device and want to log in to Matrix, I have to:

install my favourite Matrix client or go to a website to use Element online.
type in my username
type in my password

You currently do not have to do this if you call people on GSM networks.

And given they all use packets and everything is still online:
* Why are carriers still charging separately for making calls and sending messages on their network? Okay, I know some provide unlimited everything, but not all.
* Why do phone manufacturers include separate settings for disabling mobile data and GSM connection (a.k.a. "the plane mode")?

Untill these questions are answered and adressed, people will still think of it as two different things, and use accordingly.
