But typing the special characters in both HTML and BBCode is indeed cumbersome, especially when using a lot of formatting in one post. I'll wait and see if they can confirm what aspects of Markdown work here, given that it seems instance-dependent and you can't see it even in posts originating in instances that do allow it, like yours.
