It was *several years later* that the US went for extradition, while Assange had already gotten wind early after his arrival in the UK on in the Swedish affair, that a criminal case against him was in the works in the US. And he also knew of Sweden's intention to "defer their interest in him to the Americans."

That's why it was completely in *his* interest to maximally co-operate w/ the investigation *while avoiding both extradition and detention*
