i am not sure either...
my experience in the bitcoin core (and related FOSS) development community has been good, i have never witnessed, nor experienced ostracizing of minorities, women etc, if anything the group is extremely diverse, at least as much as can be expected from software dev
outside of that though... it's pretty horrible, i know all about the mental health toll, i am sometimes spooked why bitcoin attracts that, there's no real reason why it had to be this way
it's not something inherent to cypherpunk; the group around Tor and privacy tech (though also notably toxic sometimes) has always been more mixed
i'm sad to hear it's so bad in Brazil (it's not the first time i hear that)
as for "the old communities sit on the gold while doing the bare minimum to develop the technology to themselves", i felt that at times, in the past, but nowadays there's a lot of sponsoring and grants and such coming out of the woodwork so i think there's quite a few that do contribute their to further development and to getting new people involved. Is it enough? i don't know...
absolutely wishing you the best of luck with your project
