the only successful separatist movement was Timor Leste but I can’t recall what level of pushback there was among the public after Habibie granted the referendum and accepted the result.

Having said that, only Papua and Timor Leste were annexed. The others have always been part of the country since the formation and fought together in the independence war.

Actually, I shouldn’t have said Sulawesi because that separatist movement was much wider and started in Java
