there are Mastodon power users out in the fediverse, followed by thepit.social users, who have 30k, 50k, 80k posts, and a copy of all of them is stored in our database. i would imagine a ton of it is digital refuse (accounts followed by inactive users, follows users have forgotten about, etc.) but as far as i know there are no tools for cleaning it up, and as an instance/server ages, the pile of digital refuse just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
