the way Mastodon works, an instance/server doesn't just store the posts from its users, it stores the posts and media of **all the other users** that its users follow.
maybe you can see where this is going.
it's not even about power users on our instance. all it takes is a couple of our users following a handful of power users on **other** instances and our database sucks in a ton of external content.
