I think Twitter got big because it tickled the 'belong to a tribe' thing in people's brains, in addition to the sort of 'must get dopamine hit from doing something’. I think we tend to underestimate how hard it is to 'change tribes'. You abandon your friends and family and strike out on your own and try to find somewhere that makes you feel like you 'belong'.
I feel like I've found that with Mastodon. There are enough furries and dorks here that I'm like oh, this is what I want well enough. I sit by the side and watch people yell and fight and HOA and The Bad Place back and forth, and it doesn't touch me really so I don't leave.
I know people who absolutely don't feel that way, and they wander off to find somewhere they do.
