I'm luckier in that BSD generally discusses everything on mailing lists, and the commit logs are expected to be detailed. But backtracking where something came from still takes forever. I'll often spend hours searching for a detail so I can write one stupid sentence.
"The first jaillike feature appeared in Fifth Edition Unix in 1975?" Yeah, people are going to ask and it's good to include but it's definitely a headdesk search.
