Well, I don't disagree with your point about pattern-seeking or working backwards. And I don't need to convince you to believe what I believe. But I do know a lot of specific examples that push me to believe in intelligent design— it's not working backwards. Even virus replication in and of itself is so chemically complicated that I can't imagine it coming by chance, let alone the rest of the cell needing to function. And it just moves up from there.
Some people will see the Earth and say "wow, we're one in— so far as we can guess— a million. It's amazing our world supports life". And I can respect that. But I'm the kind of person who sees Earth and says "wow, I can't speculate about other planets that I can't see, but jesus it's insane that our planet supports life, and I reaaally don't think it happened by chance". And to me, I don't really see the difference, much. We're all just speculating. A lot of people— both religious and secular-scientific— try to pretend that we're not speculating— but we are. We didn't observe anything more than a hundred thousand years ago, nor any life past our solar system. We can only build models that are "good enough" for our current knowledge.
