Also, you're describing the current state of this system (roughly dark forest) as though it were the desired or ideal end state, but it's just *a* state.

ActivityPub leaders and Mastodon devs have both indicated in this thread and elsewhere that they're moving toward reply gating…which is a standard anti-harassment feature in many other systems. I think that's great and will make this place much nicer for a lot of people I'll be happy to see here.
